Do you have an event coming up that you could benefit from having a custom overlay on Snapchat? Snapchat recently announced a new service that allows users to create custom, on-demand geofilters for a specified amount of time in a specified location. After playing with the settings for a little bit, we determined that the $5 minimum would cover an 8 hour period. However, you are capable of creating a filter that displays for an hour, all the way up to 30 days. The minimum space required is 20,000 feet, but it could go all the way to 5,000,000 square feet. This has the potential to be a powerful promotional tool when used correctly.
In the demo video on their blog, an example is given to demonstrate how this service could be used for a birthday party. This is a good example to display the process, but it is unlikely that most of the money they are going to be generating is going to be coming from individual use. Retail stores, restaurants, and bars are going to be advertising current deals, specials, or happy hour. Traveling acts, such as bands or comedians, can advertise locally for an upcoming performance. There is so much potential in this marketing technique, and I’m interested in seeing how it is implemented.
Snapchat is trying new ways to monetize their service
This move is another creative way to monetize the use of their service. Recently, they closed down their lens shop, which was a place where users could purchase a lens that detects the user’s face and creates an interactive overlay. It is unclear why they stopped selling the lenses, but they will still provide a rotating selection of 10 filters that are free to use. They have still been able to monetize from advertising by allowing businesses to create sponsored lenses and geofilters. Gatorade reported over 100 million views on a sponsored lens that they created for the Super Bowl. Now they are extending the ability to advertise on their app to much more people with the launch of this brand new service.
Snapchat does not provide a service to create the image overlays for the filters. This means that users are required to submit their own graphics to be displayed. Our team of graphic designers are excited by this endeavor because of the opportunity it creates for designers to showcase their work. If you think that you or your business could benefit from these custom filters, get in touch with us and we can discuss providing a graphic designer to create custom graphics for your geofilter at a discounted rate.
